A Childhood Spent Unloved —Diane Adams

Most times we take being loved for granted —loving parents, loving spouses, friends, family, or people in general who care about us. But it is a blessing and a privilege that many have been deprived of, either at some point in their lives or completely from the beginning. Diane Adams’ life has fallen into the latter category since childhood. Knowing what loss and abandonment are, she yearned for a love that would fill the hollowness inside her. Burning for Love tells her story.

Coming from a family that had a complex dynamic to begin with, things started getting bad for Diane when her mother started physically abusing her in her father’s absence. The abuse would stop when his father would come home from his current assignment, as he worked for the US military and was often absent from home. This continued on for years, forcing Diane to pull away from her and find refuge in animals, her father when he was around, and her grandparents, whom she would always escape to when her mother got worse.

Things looked bleak for a while, and Diane hoped for better days, but the illusion of monotony broke when her mother’s drug addiction got worse and she was found to have an affair with a man from work. Things escalated, and Diane’s world became a tangled mess of courtrooms, fights, and more abuse. With no way out once her parents got divorced, Diane continued to choose the stability and normality she had had in her life up until now by living with her mother.

Her father, despite not liking the arrangement, chose to live close to their old house to stay involved in Diane’s life. But not soon after did he abandon them. A little over half a year passed, and Diane seemed to settle into her new routine, but it was then that her mother took her own life. The turmoil and instability that characterized Diane’s life only grew after that point.

Burning for Love details the sad truth of life that many live, yet it gets swiped away underneath the trendier topics that find people’s interests. Diane Adams faced many hardships and difficulties in life but learned to overcome them all eventually. Her strength and courage, she drew from within and learned to move forward despite everything.

Experiencing loss, abandonment, and abuse from an early age, Diane yearned for love that she couldn’t receive from the people who were supposed to care for her. She realized what she went through and how it would have an impact on her life. Her story is an example for those who are stuck in unhealthy and toxic situations with no way out. She learned that the answer to finding the love she had been so desperately looking for all her life was right there within her; by learning to love herself, she prevailed through the hardships of life. Burning for Love is a hope that Diane Adams gives to her readers that, no matter how gradual, things will get better.
